    @jmittell It was "about something" because it made it pretty clear (in pilot) it was about parents asserting their authority over children.

    @jmittell ...basically would have a situation for people to react to but no plot to resolve. People talk about stuff and then it's over.

    @jmittell I think that's because the shows literally had no plot (which made it so refreshing then). So there are no stories to remember.

    What I'm referring to is bad sitcom characters routinely behave irrationally, and unlike Pomerantz, most writers didn't find it a problem.

    @jmittell Maybe. But as a kid I didn't notice the differential so much as that she was always after him for being (supposedly) fat.

    One thing somebody pointed out is that though Bill Cosby isn't a bad-looking guy, people on the show acted like they were fat guy/hot wife.

    The COSBY SHOW episode on is the second one, "Goodbye Mr. Fish," written by Earl Pomerantz. In some ways the show never lived up to this ep.
